Recipients
Using census and other demographic information, we identify the poorest sections of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The local police departments and social service agencies further designate areas of poverty. The Mr. Anthony Program delivers food to families in those neighborhoods. Since the food is distributed on the streets of the poorest neighborhoods, the program reaches those families at the very bottom who have little hope, few resources, and limited information about what is available to them through existing assistance programs.
Overview
The Mr. Anthony Program delivers over 1 million pounds of nutritious food per year, 6 days a week, all year round to low-income families and individuals in Alameda and Contra Costa counties using an all volunteer labor force of over 100 volunteers. All of the food, except for holiday turkeys and hams, is donated and delivered free of charge to the recipients. Because no one in the organization is compensated, the use of the food sorting facility is donated and there are no costs of administration, the Mr. Anthony Program is able to distribute 20 pounds of food for every dollar that is donated.
Operation
Seven days a week volunteers drive to local retail stores and produce markets and receive donations of fresh produce, meats, prepared foods, dairy products and other grocery items. Companies such as Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe's, Target and vendors at the San Francisco Wholesale Produce Market donate food all year round. When the trucks return, volunteer crews sort the food and assemble at least 60 boxes daily that weigh 40 pounds or more and include an assortment of nutritious food. Trucks, functioning as mobile distribution centers, drive into poor neighborhoods and deliver boxes right into the arms of needy individuals and families. In addition, T.O.T.A. volunteers and people from the neighborhood carry food boxes to shut-ins and elderly residents.
Holiday Season
During the holidays, special food boxes, each containing a turkey or ham and all the trimmings for a festive meal, are provided to 1,500 families. We fundraise to pay for the turkeys and hams - all other food is donated.
In partnership with the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, thousands of toys are also delivered to children at Christmas.
